In February 2023, I embarked on a learnership at AVBOB under the 140 Unemployed Long-Term Learnership Programme. Through training and induction at Head Office and at the Lynnwood Branch, I delved into the fundamentals of being a financial representative.
In April 2023, I transitioned to Learning and Development (L&D) at Head Office, from where I rotated through different departments, where I received unwavering support and guidance from mentors who encouraged and inspired me to pursue excellence and embrace challenges.
I gained essential administrative skills and learnt about ONE Connect, production, coordinating, cost analysis, study loans, attendance registers, capturing premiums and payments, and how to create and edit training videos. I also gained insights into performance management and the appraisal process as well as a deep understanding of how bonuses are calculated and the significance of performance appraisals in motivating employees.
I honed my verbal and non-verbal communication skills, learning to convey information effectively. I was taught to multitask efficiently, work under pressure, and deliver results promptly. I developed soft skills such as patience and empathy and was guided on how to diffuse frustrations with tact and understanding. I also learnt the importance of apologising gracefully and taking responsibility.
Efforts were also made to enable me to work from home as part of the hybrid work arrangements.
I participated in events such as the year-end function, auction, move to Irene and CEO Breakfast, which was a particular honour as I met our CEO – I will cherish shaking hands with and receiving motivational words from him.
As a permanent employee, I’ve worked at OD (Organisational Development) and the Premium Admin Cash Department. I am currently based at Montana Life as an Admin Clerk, where the skills I acquired serve me well.
My journey from a learner to a permanent AVBOB employee has been a remarkable adventure filled with growth, learning and valuable experiences. I am immensely grateful to my mentor, Mrs Nthabiseng Nxumalo, for believing in my potential and providing me with opportunities to evolve within AVBOB. I am excited to continue contributing to AVBOB’s success.
